Fachwerkmuseum im Ständerbau

Fachwerkmuseum im Ständerbau (Foto: Fachwerkmuseum Ständerbau, W. Fischer)

This stunning half-timber museum is the only one of its kind so far and demonstrates the balloon frame construction from the 14th century. The house is one of Germany's oldest half-timbered houses and the oldest preserved in Quedlinburg. The wooden post frame surround the house from the sill plate to the top plate, with intermediate floor structures let into and nailed to them that divide the house in two storey’s. The heights of window sills, headers and next floor height would be marked out on the studs with a storey pole. The museum is about the history of timber-framed buildings from the 14th to the 19th century and restoration as well as reconstruction measures in the city. The development of the construction is explained with the help of model houses. Replica of various wood joints and carpenter's tools can be held by the visitors to get that real feeling of the buildings.
