Falkenstein castle

Falkenstein castle (c)Kulturstiftung Sachsen-Anhalt, J. Schymalla

The master builders have done a great job: The fortified, Falkenstein castle has sat high above the Selke valley for many centuries and never once been captured.
Those who come today with peaceful intentions can pass through the gates without a fight and enjoy one of the most impressive and best-preserved castles in the Harz Mountains, built in 1115-1120. The restored great hall, the late Gothic style church and the old castle chapel are only a few examples of the many furnished rooms from different eras. Falkenstein Castle is associated with a pinnacle point of history: In 1220, Count Hoyer von Falkenstein, commissioned Eike von Repgow to write his famous book of law, the "Sachsenspiegel" (Saxon mirror), the first ever German law book. Inextricably linked to the castle is the wild romantic landscape, particularly that of the Selke valley, which gently fades into Meisdorf. Here too, the Falkensteiner lords held land, possessions and the Meisdorf Castle.
